A Film Series Curated by Wolgin Prize Finalist Sanford Biggers: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring

This event is part of a series of collaborative public programs presented in conjunction with the Tyler School of Art’s Jack Wolgin International Competition in the Fine Arts.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring, director Kim Ki-duk's beautiful and meditative film in five parts, follows the life of a Buddhist monk from his formative years as an apprentice through old age. This is one of the four films Biggers selected to be screened in conjunction with his exhibition at Temple Gallery. These films approach African American identity in American history, from the 1930s through the present day, through cultural media including music, dance, film and religion.

Special Collections Showcase: Celebrating 125 Years of Temple

This showcase will offer an opportunity to speak with curators at the Special Collections Department and hold Temple’s history in your hands. The Libraries’ Special Collections Department oversees the Conwellana-Templana Collection, Temple’s unofficial university archives and a rich repository of materials related to Russell Conwell.

Please join us as faculty from around Temple gather to discuss their latest research and publications at the fall’s second installment of Chat in the Stacks.

GIS Day Symposium

For the first time, the Libraries celebrate Geographic Information Systems Day with a morning symposium. This worldwide celebration, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, educates communities on the applications of geography and computer-aided mapping. The Libraries' celebration features speakers from across Temple, as well as the CEO of Avencia, a leading local firm that adapts GIS for unique projects. A reception will take place from noon to 1:00 PM.

Race and Judaism Symposium:
"In Every Tongue -- In Memory of Gary Tobin"

The 2009 Race and Judaism Symposium at Temple University will be devoted to themes in memory of Gary Tobin, the founder and former president of the Institute for Jewish Research and Community. This symposium brings together scholars for discussions culminating in a keynote by Rabbi Capers Funnye of the Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in Chicago.

"John Brown in the African Mind, A Conversation on the Legacy of Brown"

The Blockson Collection, in conjunction with Larry Robins of Philadelphia independent bookstore Robin’s Books and Moonstone Arts Center, presents a conversation on the legacy of John Brown. This discussion, "John Brown in the African Mind," will feature renowned scholars Charles L. Blockson, founder of the Blockson Collection, and Molefi K. Asante of Temple’s African American Studies Department.
