Tyler School of Art

Dear Temple architecture graduate,

What a busy year! The Oct. 7 Brooke Harrington Retirement Roast was a wonderful event. Located in the green hallway and atrium of the new Tyler Building here on Temple's Main Campus, we had a great view of the new architecture building site on 13th Street (between Norris and Diamond streets).

The photo to the right is of Brooke sitting in a large, red velvet armchair with a red ceremonial sash and new, very large eyebrows. Well, of course, there was really no need for the extra eyebrows, but it did help us see his reactions to alumni comments about him through the years -- even from the back of the room.
Brooke Harrington Retirement Roast - Best Wishes, Brooke!

We continue to have good news about the new building. The Sept. 15 groundbreaking for the architecture building was the first for the Temple 20/20 framework (I find this very fitting for the new design initiatives on campus). When presenting Temple 20/20 at a campuswide town hall meeting on Nov. 17, Temple University President Ann Weaver Hart stated that the architecture building -- and all new buildings on the campus -- will be LEED Certified. Our building has a few key features to that end, including the green roof that will stand across the courtyard from the Tyler building's green-painted hallway (ours will be sedum, which flowers beautifully!).

Other exciting news from Temple Architecture:

Alumni Advisory Group
Working with Bob Shuman -- who many of you know as a classmate, colleague or instructor -- and Tyler's Director of Development Lois Gabin-Legato, we've started work on creating an alumni advisory group for the architecture program. So far, we've gathered together a few different groups to discuss the formation and need for an alumni advisory group, focusing on how we can partner with the department working for your benefit and how you can also work to benefit the department. As initiatives unfold I'll keep you informed, and anyone who wants to be part of the conversation or wants to volunteer, let me know at mwingert@temple.edu!

Share Your News
Those of you who have had me as a studio instructor can remember the time in the semester, always when you are tired but really close to finishing, when I would walk out of the studio saying "See you next week, I expect great things!!!!" We still expect great things from all of you, and we'd really like to know what you have been up to. To this end -- and thanks to Sarah Salem (Temple Architecture, Class of 2010) -- the department is creating an architecture alumni web site. Please send any news, recent projects, awards, things you want to brag about, to architecture@temple.edu so we can post your accomplishments and feature images of your work. You can also submit your class notes online at Temple's online community, myowlspace.com. Please don't be timid or modest. In meeting with you and trying to locate some of you over the past year, I am amazed at who you are and what you have done. The range of your work maps well with the diversity and richness of our program and reflects incredibly well on Temple University. We need your contributions for this, and it would be really great to feature you prominently on our web site as we move into new space and roll out new programs!

Upcoming Events
On Feb. 14, 2011 we will have a reception for our accreditation visit. The reception will give the National Architecture Accreditation Board (NAAB) visiting team the chance to meet and talk with alumni and practitioners. The reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the atrium of the Tyler School of Art. We'd love to see you there. Look for details on the architecture web site in early 2011.

Spring will also bring a lecture series and exhibits, including one at the AIA Center for Architecture, an exhibit of all architecture programs in Philadelphia.

We need your help to continue making progress in our department and to support our students. As always, the size of your gift is not as important as giving itself: Even a small contribution will make a significant difference for our current and future architects. Please consider making a gift or pledge now by visiting myowlspace.com/makeagift (click here for instructions on how to give to Architecture Department). Remember: You can claim your support through Dec. 31 as a charitable deduction on your 2010 taxes. (All gifts to Temple University are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.)

Warmest regards,
Kate Wingert-Playdon
