Message From the President...

As president of the College of Liberal Arts Alumni Association, it is my pleasure to introduce you to The Bridge, your new CLA alumni e-newsletter. One of the association’s numerous goals is to make sure that our alumni are well informed about campus news and events as well as notable alumni achievements. We hope you will enjoy reading The Bridge on a quarterly basis.

In this issue, we call your attention to several new campus programs serving CLA, and take you inside the just-reopened Baptist Temple. I am very much looking forward to your feedback on The Bridge. I hope you will feel free to e-mail me at jerry.vigna@temple.edu with your opinions -- and with ideas for future content. Got something interesting going on? Drop me a line.

Go Owls!

Temple Unveils ProRanger Philadelphia Program
Thirteen CLA students have been selected as the first ProRanger Philadelphia trainees. Temple is the only institution in the nation chosen by the Park Service to host the first-of-its-kind four-year program, which will eventually include students from a variety of Temple schools and colleges. Upon graduation from Temple University and successfully completing the ProRanger program, participants will be placed in a permanent career tenure law enforcement park ranger position with the National Park Service. Alumni Giving Back: The TemPALS Experience
Len Mellman graduated from CLA in 1949 with a B.A. in English. He joined the Arts & Sciences alumni board in 1972, eventually becoming president of the CLA board (of which he is a lifetime member) as well as the university alumni association board. Among his many accomplishments, he has worked extensively with the TemPALS program, which matches Temple alumni with incoming international students in an effort to help them adjust academically, culturally and socially to the Philadelphia area and to Temple. Click here to read Len’s story of friendship with a Japanese exchange student.

Faculty Spotlight

Eli Goldblatt, professor of English and a leading expert on community-based learning, says that Temple scholars and students have been developing effective community-based academic initiatives for decades. What has been lacking, he said, was constructive pooling of effort and resources, a trend that began to change under President Ann Weaver Hart. Now those resources have been collected at Temple’s new Community Learning Network. More.
