Abraham Freedman was a legal scholar, civic leader, judge and teacher. This program and panel discussion will focus on the legacy and impact of Judge Freedman and the city's reform movement. It will also include an exploration of Judge Freedman's archives, which are housed in the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Collection at Temple University Libraries.

Braulio Munoz, a sociologist, critic and creative writer, is the Centennial Professor at Swarthmore College. In 2009, he was the recipient of the International Latino Book Award - First Prize - in New York. He will speak at Paley Library as part of the lecture series on the work of Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa.

In Tasting Freedom, Pulitzer Prize-winner Daniel Biddle and Murray Dubin painstakingly chronicle the life of Octavius Valentine Catto. The book presents the little-known stories of Catto, a charismatic black leader who fought for equal rights before his murder in 1871, and the men and women who struggled to change America. Join the authors for a discussion on researching, reconstructing and writing this important American story.
