Graduate Student Barnes Club Annual Conference

This issue of the newsletter spotlights three tremendous history faculty members. We celebrate Susan Klepp's retirement by remembering her long career in academia; we catch up with Nguyen Thi Dieu, who has returned from her sabbatical and is planning a trip to the Institute of South East Asian Studies in Singapore; and we introduce Eileen Ryan, the department's newest faculty member.

Centers in the History Department are busy hosting events and collaborating with partners throughout Temple and the city. The Center for Public History is focusing on "creative partnership" as a key theme in this year's classroom programming. Events include a collaboration with Drexel's Historic Costume Collection and a partnership with Tyler School of Art. The Feinstein Center recently launched its "What is Your Food Worth," a two-year series of events focusing on food, ethics, sustainability and eating Jewish. CENFAD is gearing up for a two-day conference on U.S. military after a successful September symposium focusing on Cold War films.

Temple Owl Fly South to Cape Town, South Africa

Ben Talton went along on a Temple University Alumni Association trip to South Africa to serve as faculty expert and informal university ambassador. From Robben Island to Cape Town and Pretoria, the group learned about the nation's complicated history and even had an opportunity to spend time on a private game reserve. Read more.
