From the Alumni President...

Dawn Ramos

The beginning of the fall semester is always the most exciting time to be on campus. Change is in the air in Anderson and Gladfelter – and in your CLA Alumni Association. I couldn't be more excited to step into the role of president or more grateful to Jerry Vigna for his leadership these last few years.

As the school year starts and the college welcomes about 800 new students to our family, your board has been busy working with the Temple University Alumni Association on several exciting projects. We look forward to seeing you all at Homecoming game and tailgate on October 19. You should be receiving your invitation to this year's festivities shortly. Be on the lookout, too, for Temple's Alumni Global Day of Service. On Saturday, November 9, CLA alumni will be coming together to work at community gardens in North Philadelphia.

See you at our first home football game of the season, September 7, against Houston.

Go Owls!

Dads on Diaper Duty

Something is changing with today's young fathers. By their own accounts, by their wives' testimony, and according to studies and other statistics, more men are doing more around the house. Jay Fagan, a sociology professor at Temple and founding editor of the academic journal Fathering, says the inverse relationship between hours worked outside and inside the home is a big reason: "When the mother is working full-time, it is impossible for her to do everything."

Grad Student Preserves Stories of African American AIDS Activists

When Royles began conducting research for his dissertation in history, he was interested in uncovering the strategies that African-American activists used to mobilize their communities to focus on and attend to the AIDS epidemic among black people in the U.S.

Ben Kohl

Professor Ben Kohl (1954-2013)

The Department of Geography and Urban Studies at Temple University is greatly saddened by the sudden death of friend and colleague Professor Ben Kohl. Ben was a phenomenal teacher, colleague, mentor, and friend.  He cared deeply about students and was extremely supportive of junior faculty. Ben’s commitment to social justice permeated all aspects of his life and it is difficult to imagine the department without him.

CLA Study Proves Trees Fight Crime
A study by Temple undergraduate Mary Wolfe set out to answer the question: Does vegetation encourage or suppress crime? After studying Landsat satellite images and comparing the images to Philadelphia Police crime statistics, Wolfe and Jeremy Mennis, associate professor of geography and urban studies at Temple, found that areas with abundant vegetation did suppress crime. The study was made possibly by a Temple University Creative Arts, Research and Scholarship (CARAS) grant.
