Tyler School of Art

The Tyler School of Art will host two events on Saturday, April 20 during Alumni Weekend 2013.

"Call and Response," a Cross-Disciplinary Arts Symposium, brings together artists, performers, and scholars from the different branches of the creative arts. The inspiration for this symposium is the Tyler exhibition, "Charles Searles: In Motion," which features the paintings and sculptures of one of Philadelphia’s most significant African American artists (1937-2004). Curated by Art History graduate students with Professor Susanna Gold, the exhibition examines Searles’ work as it is influenced by music and dance rhythms. Taking a cue from the themes of the exhibition, the symposium uses Searles’ work as a springboard to further investigate intersections of visual art, music, dance, and theater. A number of the Center’s faculty and graduate students will participate in the event, as well as notable scholars and artists from outside the University. The symposium will close with the opening reception for the Charles Searles exhibition in the Tyler/Presser Atrium.
Both events are free and open to the public.
