7:30 PM

Conwell Dance Theater

1801 North Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA 19122

This year’s Dance Alumni Showcase features work by choreographers Craig Scull, BFA ’04, Jessica Warchal-King, MFA ’10, and Wanjiru Kamuyu, MFA ’98. Tickets are $20 general admission/ $15 students and senior citizens/$10 Temple Employees and patrons with Dance USA Philadelphia Dance Pass/$5 with OWLcard (Temple student ID) and are available in advance at the Liacouras Center Box Office www.liacourascenter.com. Just click on “Buy tickets” and Temple Dance.

Craig Scull along with his local dance company, Scull and Bones Dance Company, will present a large group piece entitled “Pariah” which is a dramatic, edgy, and exciting 30 minute dance exploring themes and issues related to sexuality, gender, and identity. Scull and Bones Dance Company poses questions and challenges notions about cultural issues through the use of Dance Memoir, theatrical staging effects, and imaginative movement metaphor. Craig’s bio can be found here.

Jessica Warchal-King will present a group piece entitled “Embedded Layers.” Jessica is looking at three primary questions: “What is the relationship between age and the female body and the body on display? What is beauty? How does time affect our perceived sense of self and relationship to our environment?” Jessica is a member of Kun-Yang Lin Dance Company and her bio can be found here.

Wanjiru Kamuyu will present a thirty minute excerpt of a full length solo called “Spiral” which explores the effects of the imposed Western patriarchal beauty standards and women’s acceptance and assimilation of these standards. Being a woman who has lived on three continents, Wanjiru is intrigued by the historical and current globalization of the beauty industry. She wonders what it would take to make an alternative choice—to embrace and celebrate one’s natural beauty. Wanjiru’s bio can be found here.
