As I said in my inaugural address last October, the quality of a Temple education will always rest, first and foremost, on our extraordinary faculty. Thank you for everything you do.
I also want to update you on some of the most exciting developments taking place at Temple.
Unprecedented faculty recruitment
Our most exciting development involves you. I am proud to announce that this year, Temple has recruited more than 50 outstanding new tenured and tenure-track faculty from the world's leading institutions.
- These exceptional scholars, researchers and creative minds increase the total number of new tenured and tenure-track faculty hired since 2004 to about 630—an unprecedented influx of new talent during a decade of stagnant hiring and faculty cutbacks at institutions nationwide.
-
Temple is investing heavily in faculty, because we know you are the heart of this institution. You produce breakthroughs in labs, pioneer the use of new education technology and—most importantly—create a brighter future for our students, our community and our world.
I am humbled to work with you all, and I am thrilled to welcome our new faculty to Temple.
Record-breaking fundraising
For the second year in a row, Temple has set a new record for fundraising—and the main driver of that success was you!
- The fiscal year that ended June 30 marked a new milestone for faculty support, which topped $7 million.
- Growing support for faculty is becoming a notable trend. We raised $1.2 million for faculty in 2012, then saw a leap to $6.7 million in 2013 and a rise to $7.3 million this year.
- Overall, the university saw a record $67.9 million in gifts and commitments this year, compared with $65.8 million last year.
Our success in fundraising shows that Temple is a university on the rise, and that our faculty is worthy of investment.
Campus changes
Main Campus continues to improve:
- This fall, we will open the state-of-the-art Science Education and Research Center at 12th Street and Polett Walk. The new facility will provide abundant opportunities for exploration and investigation.
- Wachman Hall will be upgraded with 26 new or renovated classrooms.
- We are also continuing to pursue plans for a new library.
And later this year, we will announce the results of Visualize Temple, our campus planning process. I am deeply grateful to all of you who shared your ideas for Temple's future.
With all of these changes taking place, I have no doubt this will be an extraordinary year at Temple. I wish you all the best for a great start to the semester, and I look forward to hearing about the amazing work you do this year.
Sincerely,
Neil D. Theobald
