For those of you who are new to Temple—including incoming freshmen, transfer, graduate, international and professional students—welcome to the Temple community. You are beginning a life-changing experience, and we are thrilled to have you here.
For those of you returning to campus, welcome back. You are one step closer to earning your Temple degree and completing an education that will carry you wherever you go in life.
As the new semester gets under way, I have some exciting updates to share.
Fly in 4
This fall marks the launch of Fly in 4, Temple’s innovative plan to help freshmen and new transfer students graduate on time and limit their debt. Thus far, more than 75 percent of new freshmen have already signed up.
If you are eligible for Fly in 4 and have not yet signed the agreement, you can do so on TUportal under the “Next Steps” channel.
We have also invested heavily in advising and made sure necessary classes are available. Fly in 4 will make this school year a smoother one for everyone at Temple.
New academic calendar
Based on feedback we received from students and faculty, we’re making a number of changes to the academic calendar this year:
- For the first time, Temple will have a fall break. We’ve added three days off during Thanksgiving week, giving you a full week off from classes.
- The new calendar will also reduce the length of winter break to about three and a half weeks, but Commencement will be earlier than it has been in the past. This change will give you a head start on the summer job market.
Campus changes
Main Campus continues to improve:
- This fall, we will open the state-of-the-art Science Education and Research Center at 12th Street and Polett Walk. The new facility will provide abundant opportunities for exploration and investigation.
- Wachman Hall will be upgraded with 26 new or renovated classrooms.
- We are also continuing to pursue plans for a new library.
And later this year, we will announce the results of Visualize Temple, our campus planning process. I am deeply grateful to all of you who have shared your ideas for Temple’s future, and I look forward to sharing more with you soon.
Finally, I want to urge you to explore the extraordinary opportunities that Temple University and the city of Philadelphia have to offer.
I also want to remind you that for many people in this great city, you are the public face of Temple. I know that each of you takes pride in being an Owl—demonstrate that pride every day.
If I can be of assistance to you here at Temple, contact me directly at president@temple.edu. Let me know how I can help you succeed.
In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you on campus.
Sincerely,
Neil D. Theobald
