Love Conquers the Law:
One Woman’s Voice Silences DOMA

Edie WindsorSaturday, April 26
2–4 pm

Temple Performing Arts Center

$12 per person (plus fees)

Join us for a screening of Edie & Thea:
A Very Long Engagement
, followed by a Q&A with Edie Windsor, CLA ’50, moderated by Angela Giampolo,
LAW ’08.

Windsor and Thea Spyer were engaged for 42 years before marrying in Toronto in 2007. Their romance is chronicled in Edie & Thea: A Very Long Engagement. When Spyer died in 2009, the estate tax—which would not have been imposed had Spyer been a man—cost Windsor more than $600,000. She filed a federal suit in New York asserting that the Defence of Marriage Act (DOMA) treated her marriage unequally compared with heterosexual marriages. The case took her all the way to the Supreme Court, where on June 26, 2013, DOMA was declared unconstitutional under the Due Process Clause. Windsor’s role as the plaintiff landed her as a runner-up in the 2013 Time Person of the Year rankings, but this remarkable woman has been blazing her own trail since the 1950s.

This event is presented by The Leonard Mellman Visiting Scholars Program. The Leonard Mellman Endowed Fund for Visiting Scholars provides benefits to students and faculty throughout the College of Liberal Arts by exposing them to leading lecturers from a variety of disciplines annually.

Questions? Contact Denise Krenski at 215-204-8748 or tuf60458@temple.edu.

Before the event, join us for another event to honor Edie Windsor and learn more about the Defense of Marriage Act.
