Dear Colleague,

Over the past several years, we’ve reorganized and enhanced Institutional Research and Assessment at Temple so that we could be more strategic and responsive to the rapidly changing higher education environment. And although I have 25 years of experience in higher education, I am relatively new to the institutional research profession and wanted to share with you some of the exciting changes we’ve made.

Institutional Research and Assessment (IRA) at Temple now consists of three divisions:
  • Data analysis and reporting
  • Assessment and evaluation
  • Exam services
All three areas support our mission of “collecting data and providing accurate and actionable information and analysis to university decision-makers, the Temple community and external stakeholders.” The information we provide is used for assessment, planning, policy formulation and mandated reporting.
Since September 2012, Temple has invested significantly in institutional research including a reorganization, additional positions and new systems to support our work. Five new research analysts have joined our team and we now produce a factbook and “at-a-glance“ fact sheet each year.

We’ve expanded the assessment and evaluation section of our website to highlight the university’s assessment planning and reporting processes and offer helpful resources for assessing student learning. Temple also purchased Academic Insights to allow us to benchmark continuous improvement on key academic metrics.

Most importantly, IRA provides data in support of the university’s Six Commitments, the strategic priorities that ensure Temple remains a leading public research university. Specifically, we’re tracking the academic success of members of the class of 2018, the first class to participate in Fly in 4, Temple’s innovative program to limit student debt and ensure that students graduate in four years. Additionally, in collaboration with our colleagues in budget and finance, we developed an academic indicators report to track the impact of the university’s new decentralized budget model on academic metrics such as student quality and faculty productivity.

My colleagues and I regularly attend NEAIR and AIR meetings and I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event. In the meantime, however, I hope you will visit temple.edu/IRA or temple.edu to learn more about the exciting things happening at Temple University.

Regards,
