While finishing her MS degree in exercise and sports psychology at Temple University, Kristin began teaching fitness classes to women transitioning from addiction, abuse and incarceration at Interim House, an inpatient treatment facility. Kristin wanted to pursue a career in physical activity promotion, specifically using body movement as an effective complement to treatment for anxiety and depression among women. In May 2009, Kristin decided to take the plunge, moving beyond fitness classes and establishing Gearing Up, a program designed to engage women with histories of abuse, addiction and incarceration as a means of establishing a long-term habit to promote physical, emotional and social health. To launch, Advanced Sports International President, Pat Cunnane (also a Temple University alum) donated five Fuji bikes to the cause, and Gearing Up has been 'moving in the right direction' ever since. As founder and director of Gearing Up, Kristin is using alternative and creative outlets like exercise to help women transition into the next phase of their recovery. When Kristin is not out pedaling with Gearing Up riders, she can be found with her husband, Scott, mountain biking or walking their dogs on the trails in the Wissahickon.
