In this new position, Sarwer will oversee and develop all aspects of the college’s research mission, support faculty in interdisciplinary research programs, create a mentorship program, and promote the college’s research work among faculty and students.
Prior to coming to CPH, Sarwer was a professor of psychology in psychiatry and surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Sarwer was on the faculty of the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders, where along with his colleagues his research focused on the etiology and treatment of obesity. “The College of Public Health has been growing rapidly – adding faculty and programs,” said Siminoff. “That also means more research happening in the college. David is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher. Under his leadership I expect the college's research to expand in both breadth and scope.”
Sarwer has published two books; contributed to dozens of book chapters; and published well over 150 papers on obesity, eating disorders and the psychological aspects of plastic surgery. His current research is focused on the psychosocial issues in bariatric surgery. He is about to begin a new study, funded by NIH, to investigate the relationship between impulsivity and bariatric surgery.
He is currently editor in chief of the new journal, Obesity Science and Practice; an associate editor for both Health Psychology and Obesity Surgery; consulting editor for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals.
Sarwer received his BA in psychology from Tulane University and MA and PhD in clinical psychology from Loyola University Chicago.
