+ Our momentum is red-hot!
The College of Public Health gives a big thank you to everyone who stopped by our tent for the Temple vs. Penn State tailgate and football game. It was the largest home crowd for a football game in Temple’s history, and we wouldn’t have been able to achieve that without you!

Temple has now opened the season with a 3-0 record. That ties for the longest winning streak in the two-and-a-half seasons under head coach Matt Rhule and is the first 3-0 start since 2010. The Owls have not opened a season 4-0 since 1974 when they started 6-0 en route to a 8-2 record.

+ CPH receives $2.7 million grant for tobacco control research.
Anti Smoking Symbol
The National Cancer Institute has awarded the College of Public Health $2.7 million to research tobacco intervention in low-income families in Philadelphia.
Principal investigators of the study Stephen Lepore, PhD, and Bradley Collins, PhD, both with the department of social and behavioral sciences, will collaborate with community partner North Inc. to test an innovative “high-tech, warm-touch” intervention approach to address parental smoking and child tobacco-smoke exposure.

The intervention combines traditional behavioral counseling with technology, including a mobile application and text messaging, to provide low-cost, intensive and evidence-based tobacco control interventions to a high-need population.

“Children’s secondhand smoke exposure is a leading cause of preventable disease and death—a problem magnified in low-income and young children,” said Lepore. This is the second collaboration for Lepore and Collins around smoking cessation. (Read more on their first collaboration, Kids Safe and Smokefree or KiSS.)

Lepore is the founding director of the Social & Behavioral Health Interventions Lab, and Collins is the founding director of the Health Behavior Research Clinic.

CPH Faculty
+ Leadership and open faculty positions at CPH
This is an exciting time for the College of Public Health at Temple University. We are experiencing unprecedented growth in our enrollment, graduate programs and research. Over the next three years, the college will expand its footprint with a new building on Main Campus and add an additional 50 faculty members. In 2014, Dean Laura A. Siminoff, an eminent public health social scientist who has been continuously funded by NIH for 25 years, joined the college. Under her leadership, CPH is engaging in a realignment of interdisciplinary research and academic programming within public health.
