+ What Inspires you to Give
Every gift to the College of Public Health begins with a story—a personal reason to give back. It may be the chance to change a deserving student’s life for the better. Perhaps it’s the passion and school pride to see one’s alma mater continue to flourish and ignite real change that matters. Or maybe it’s the desire to make an impact through support for leading-edge research into solutions for some of today’s biggest challenges. Regardless of the personal reason, each gift opens the door to the future of CPH, Temple, the city of Philadelphia, and the world.

At the College of Public Health, the inspiration to give is seen everywhere. It’s in the ambitious and dedicated students. It’s in the myriad community programs throughout Philadelphia. It’s in the relentless innovation and truly global, results-oriented perspective of one of the Universities leading research entities.

Inspired to make an impact? Make a gift now, and see how contributions like yours are helping The College of Public Health transform our world. Every gift counts.

+ CPH Researchers Awarded Grant for Hepatitis C Treatment
Bass

More than three percent of the world’s population is infected with hepatitis C (HCV) and an estimated 130 million have developed chronic HCV infection. Yet, less than 30% of those with HCV initiate therapy, and an even smaller number of patients in drug use recovery do so, though they are most at risk of HCV infection.

To understand why people in methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) programs with HCV – an estimated 300,000 people - do not seek treatment, researchers from the College of Public Health’s Social and Behavioral Sciences department will spent the next 2 years testing different interventions to increase treatment rates.
Principal Investigator on the study Sarah Bauerle Bass, associate professor and director of the Risk Communication Laboratory, will systematically develop a treatment initiation intervention using contextually-relevant messages through a mobile application developed for Philadelphia MMT clients using novel marketing research evaluation methods, perceptual mapping and vector modeling. The intervention will use these marketing methods to model perceptions of HCV treatment barriers and test the mobile application in three methadone centers to assess promise of efficacy.

The study is funded by Gilead Pharmaceuticals.

+ Kristin Gavin, CPH ’09, to be inducted into Entrepreneurial Women’s Hall of Fame
Gavin

The Women’s Hall of Fame recognizes Temple alumnae for their outstanding achievements as innovators, entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurial leaders in the Philadelphia region and beyond. Each year, the League has inducted alumnae who have exhibited these achievements, continue to make strides as prominent leaders in their fields, and who can serve as role models for Temple students. And Kristin certainly fits the bill.
While finishing her MS degree in exercise and sports psychology at Temple University, Kristin began teaching fitness classes to women transitioning from addiction, abuse and incarceration at Interim House, an inpatient treatment facility. Kristin wanted to pursue a career in physical activity promotion, specifically using body movement as an effective complement to treatment for anxiety and depression among women. In May 2009, Kristin decided to take the plunge, moving beyond fitness classes and establishing Gearing Up, a program designed to engage women with histories of abuse, addiction and incarceration as a means of establishing a long-term habit to promote physical, emotional and social health. To launch, Advanced Sports International President, Pat Cunnane (also a Temple University alum) donated five Fuji bikes to the cause, and Gearing Up has been 'moving in the right direction' ever since. As founder and director of Gearing Up, Kristin is using alternative and creative outlets like exercise to help women transition into the next phase of their recovery. When Kristin is not out pedaling with Gearing Up riders, she can be found with her husband, Scott, mountain biking or walking their dogs on the trails in the Wissahickon.

If you would like to send Kristin a congratulatory note, please forward them to cph_alumnirelations@temple.edu or by mail to:
