Dear FMA Alumni,
This is a personal invitation to join me for a very special event, the first School of Theater, Film and Media Arts Tribute Award dedicated to film. Before Tuesday evenings Diamond Screen Festival, we will present this award to someone very special in our field, Garrett Brown, the filmmaker who invented the Steadicam and transformed cinematic camera movement.
We have all seen and been inspired by Garrett's work in films such as Rocky, The Return of the Jedi, Bound for Glory, The Shining, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Casino. On Tuesday night, April 26, we will have the chance to honor him.
In addition, we will be honoring one of our own undergraduate alums, Ben Semannoff, a 2001 grad who studied with Garrett, helped create our Moving Camera course, and has become a major Steadicam operator in his own right, having shot, among other things, the long, sustained Steadicam take in the fight sequence in Creed.
The award will be presented at 7pm in the Temple Performing Arts Center at 1837 North Broad Street. It will be preceded by a public reception at 6pm in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center, as well as a Media Arts Exhibition in the Chapel below. Following the Tribute Award presentation, we will begin the Diamond Screen Festival.
I very much hope you attend the Diamond Screen Festival on Tuesday, April 26th and join me in honoring Garrett Brown and Ben Semanoff.
Best,
Jeff Rush
