PhilaNOMA Camp Sustainability in the Architecture Building

Students at Camp Sustainability

PhilaNOMA’s Camp Sustainability, a summer camp for Philadelphia school children, is part of the NOMA Project Pipeline, an initiative that introduces architecture to minority youth. This summer, there were thirty campers and fifteen architecture professionals who met in the Architecture Building studios on Temple’s main campus on Saturdays in July through mid-August. The camp theme was THINK BIG! Students, ranging in age from 10 to 16 years old, designed skyscrapers and chairs and presented their work to an audience which included their mentors and families. Architecture alumni volunteers for Camp Sustainability over the past few years have included Marguerite Anglin, Tiffnay Millner, Dozie Ibeh, Martin Droz, Matthew Price, Anny Chan, Daniel Cruz, Ariana Rae Dennis, Arianna Parish and Candice Vanderhorst, and Uchenna Okere.

Tyler Continuing Education Offers a Summer Pre-College Architecture Program

Students at Camp SustainabilityStudents at Camp Sustainability

This summer saw the continuation of the popular Tyler Architecture Institute for high school students. The intensive program is an introduction to the visual language of architectural representation and design that runs daily over a two week period in July. Students learn about design techniques and the creative design search through drawing and modeling exercises, lectures and site visits. The institute allows students to explore their interest in architecture and build a portfolio prior to entry into college. The program ends with a final review where guests critique the student work and a final show of work that coincides with other Tyler summer programs for high school students.
