Dear ,
My name is Matthew Roland and I am writing to thank you for supporting the Lewis Katz School of
Medicine at Temple University, a place we both love.
I am a second year medical student with life-long connections to Temple. I was born at Temple
University Hospital and grew up just outside of Philadelphia, seeing first-hand the important role the
hospital plays in the region. After earning my bachelor’s degree in public health from John Hopkins
University, I wanted to return to Temple to study at a leading institution in urban public health and to
help the underserved communities in my city.
During my first year of medical school, I had several opportunities to get involved and make a
meaningful impact in the Temple community. I became Chair of the Minority Association of Pre-Med
Students with the Student National Medical Association, which aims to increase diversity in medicine
and eliminate ethnic health disparities through community service. I also coordinated a summer camp
for children in North Philadelphia through Bridging the Gaps, a community health internship program. In just one year, I’ve been exposed to eye-opening experiences, new perspectives and patients
which I would not find anywhere else as a medical student.
Because of your generosity, I am not only able to study at Temple, but I can take my learning beyond
the classroom. Your support strengthens our school’s educational programs, enhances the facilities we
use every day, and allows us to participate in cutting-edge research and important community initiatives.
You fund the organizations and activities that give over 800 students, including myself, experience
working directly with those most in need. Your support inspires me to go above and beyond, and to
dream of becoming a true doctor -- the type of physician, and person, dedicated to making a
difference just like you’ve done for me.
I am so proud to be training at Temple and look forward to what lies ahead during the next three years,
knowing that I have the Temple community’s love and support as I pursue my dream.
Thank you again for your investment in me and the patients I serve.
Sincerely,
Matthew Roland
