Temple Contemporary has been awarded $300,000 by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage for the development and implementation of a new project, Symphony for a Broken Orchestra
Symphony for a broken orchestra
Symphony for a Broken Orchestra is a visionary new composition by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang featuring the School District of Philadelphia’s 1,500 broken instruments. This new work will premiere in October 2017 and will be performed by a specially assembled orchestra of 600 musicians comprised of Philadelphia school students and their teachers as well as amateur and professional musicians from the classical, contemporary, jazz, hip hop and improvised music communities in Philadelphia.

Following the performances, Temple Contemporary, in collaboration with Boyer College of Music and Dance and instrument repair professionals, will repair all of the fixable instruments and return them back to the school district. Instrument repair kits will also be installed in every public school offering instrumental music classes, allowing any broken instruments in the future to be repaired. The Barra Foundation will fund this second phase of Symphony for a Broken Orchestra through a generous grant of $180,000..

Cross-Pollination: An Exhibit of Tyler Alumni Art Educators and Their Students to be Held this October
Art Market

It is not always easy or even desired to compartmentalize your identity as an artist from that as an art educator. Inevitably, a dialogue emerges between art teacher and students through creative practice. How has your artistic practice cross-pollinated with your teaching practice? How have your creative interests influenced your students, and how has their work inspired yours? How did you make it happen? Tyler School of Art’s Department of Art Education and Community Arts Practices invites all Tyler BFA, BS and MEd alumni Art Educators to submit artwork and their students’ work for a juried exhibition to be held in October 2016 during the PAEA State Conference in Philadelphia.
