Subject: We need your help to reduce electricity today
Date: Tuesday, June 13, 2017

The regional electric grid serving Temple University is predicted to reach demand peaks during the afternoon today, June 13, between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

We are requesting your help in reducing Temple’s peak electric load by decreasing your use of electricity. This will help ensure an uninterrupted supply of power.

Starting just before 2 p.m., you can help conserve energy by:

  • Turning off nonessential lights, unattended computers, copiers and other office equipment and electric appliances, such as coffee pots.

  • Control sunlight entering buildings by using blinds or curtains as appropriate.

  • If possible, wait until after 6 p.m. to charge laptops and phones.

  • Wherever possible, adjust thermostats to 75 to 78 degrees until the peak load period has passed.

To reduce our demand on the regional electric grid, Temple will be deploying its on-site electric-generating facility and dialing back air-conditioning systems in many campus buildings. However, members of the Temple community can significantly help this effort by taking the energy-saving steps listed above.

The importance of reducing electric load on a day like today is not trivial. By saving electricity effectively and consistently, Temple stands to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions. This is in addition to normal energy conservation opportunities like those described here.

During this temporary energy-reduction period, occupants in some buildings may experience slightly higher than normal temperatures and, in some cases, noticeably quieter ventilation due to the reduction of fan speeds.

If conditions become uncomfortable, please call the emergency maintenance dispatch numbers as you would at any other time. The Main Campus line is 215-204-1385, and the Health Sciences line is 215-707-4702.

Thank you for your help.
