Subject: Spring Break
Date: Friday, March 10, 2017

This announcement includes important information for students, faculty and staff in preparation for the university's spring break, which is scheduled from Monday, March 13, through Sunday, March 19.

Please note: Since some professional schools follow a different academic calendar, students from those schools should check with their departments for more specific scheduling information.

Students leaving campus: If you are leaving campus for spring break, you have a great opportunity to be sustainable and help conserve energy. Before you leave for break, please remember to:

  • Turn off all lights and unplug electrical equipment (includes appliances, televisions and stereo equipment). Turn off power strips.

  • Discard any food in refrigerators and unplug the appliance, if possible.

  • If applicable, turn heat down to 60 degrees.

  • For safety and energy efficiency, make sure all windows are closed and locked when you leave, regardless of outside temperatures. A window left open, even slightly, can lead to frozen and broken pipes.

Visit the University Housing and Residential Life website for specific information about residence hall closures during spring break.

If you live off campus and are leaving for spring break, please do the following:

  • Use light timers to make your home appear occupied at night.

  • Be sure your door and window locks work properly.

  • Ask a neighbor to watch your home and report suspicious activity.

  • Stop mail delivery. You can do this online.

  • Take your valuable items with you.

  • Activate your security system, if you have one.

  • Update or create a home inventory. Take photos and list descriptions and serial numbers of electronics and other personal property. In the event of a burglary, having a detailed inventory can help identify stolen items and make insurance claims easier to file.

  • Check smoke detectors to make sure they are working.

  • If you return and suspect someone was inside, leave the area and call the police immediately.

Students remaining on campus: All students not leaving for spring break should keep these safety precautions in mind:

  • Immediately report any suspicious activity to the police. Dial 911 or call Campus Safety Services by dialing 1-1234 from a campus phone or 215-204-1234 from a non-campus phone.

  • Do not open your door to strangers, including repair or maintenance people without prior notice.

  • If you return home and notice signs that your property has been entered, immediately go to a safe location and contact the police.

There will be no Ambler–Main Campus shuttle service, Flight or TECH Express service during spring break. However, the Walking Escort program offered through Campus Safety Services will be available daily from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. Call 8-WALK from a campus phone or 215-777-9255 to request a security escort. For more information on safety resources, visit www.temple.edu/safety.

Key services may run abbreviated hours during spring break. Use the following websites for hours of operation:
