To the Temple community:

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Temple University’s seventh president, Peter J. Liacouras, who passed away Thursday at the age of 85 after a long illness.

As you know, Chancellor Liacouras served as president from 1982 to 2000 and was a vital presence on our campus after leaving the presidency, even after an illness left him unable to speak. His ongoing attendance at university events, particularly basketball and football games, was an inspiration to me, to our student athletes and to the entire Temple University community.

Chancellor Liacouras was a man of vision and determination. It was during his tenure that Temple started to take the form we know today: international, increasingly residential, and with academic programs of the highest quality. He loved Temple and would do anything he could for the university’s greater good—before, during and after his term as president.

Temple owes a tremendous debt to Chancellor Liacouras, whose presence lives on. The Liacouras Center, the arena that is so much a part of Temple’s modern life, and Liacouras Walk, which runs through the heart of the Main Campus, were named for him.

The university, particularly the faculty, staff and trustees who worked with this remarkable man, join with the city and our alumni around the globe, to offer its deepest sympathies to his dedicated family.

Much more can be said—and will be said—about his legacy. A public memorial service for Chancellor Liacouras will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 20, in the Temple Performing Arts Center.
