Eugene Rotberg Founder’s Award to Honor Eugene Rotberg
Eugene Rotberg, SBM ’51, a current member of Temple’s CLA Board of Visitors, has supported the college not only through generous contributions, but also through service to the Temple Society of Fellows in the Humanities Awards. CLA will honor him for his impact on the university during Founder’s Celebration on May 16. More.

Save the Date: Alumni Weekend 2009 and Founders Celebration

Alumni Weekend 2009 kicks off on Friday, May 15, with the Best of the Diamond Screen Student Film Festival. The annual celebration will continue through the weekend with campus tours, lunch in the dorm and a series of seminars including College Planning 101 for alumni and friends with children who are beginning to plan their own college educations.The highlight of alumni weekend is the annual Founder’s Celebration, held on Saturday, May 16, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. This year’s celebration will include a special tribute to Temple’s 125th anniversary and will honor outstanding alumni and friends, as well as members of the classes of 1984 and 1959. More.

Compass
2008 Released

The Winter 2008 edition of Compass, the magazine for alumni and friends of the College of Liberal Arts, was published in January. The issue highlights urban planner and CLA graduate Andrew Altman and takes a stab at answering every liberal arts major’s favorite question: What are you going to do with your degree? More.

CLA Archaeologist Rediscovers Cache of American Indian Artifacts
The link between an ancient American Indian culture and a group of student archaeologists is a Red Hill businessman who spent years poking the earth of Montgomery County with a long stick. For decades, the artifacts collected by this unassuming man hung on the walls at Upper Perkiomen Middle School — until a Temple University archaeologist stopped by. More.

Learning English Through Volunteering
Every Wednesday morning, eight students in Temple’s Intensive English Language Program (IELP) pack their backpacks and set off to class. But their destination isn’t a classroom. The students are enrolled in a unique course, which provides students the opportunity to learn English through community service projects in the Philadelphia area. More.

The Boyer College of Music and Dance’s Center for Lifelong Learning offers a wide spectrum of individual lessons and group enrichment opportunities for children and adults alike. Alumni and community members are invited to take part in these unique, interactive courses. More.

Men's Basketball Men’s Basketball Clinches A-10 Championship, Advances to NCAA
For the second straight year, the Owls dominated the A-10 tournament. With their 69-64 win over Duquesne, the men's team won the tournament title and a bid for the NCAA tournment. The Owls fell to No. 6 seed Arizona State in the first round. More.

Women’s Basketball Earns No. 9 Seed in NCAA Tournament, Falls to Florida
Tonya Cardoza and the Owls made their their sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after finishing 21-9 for the season. The team was outscored by the No. 8 seed Florida Gators in the first round of tournament action. More.

Women's Fencing Women's Fencing Shows Strong Finish in NCAA Championship
With five out of six team members qualifying to compete, the Temple women's fencing team captured 8th place in the NCAA Championship. Juniors Melissa Parker (foil) and Kristen Howell (epee) led the team, each placing 10th. The women also won their 13th consecutive National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championship this season. More.

Many people — including perhaps President Obama — seem to have a type of personality that allows them to thrive during tough times. Temple psychologist Frank Farley joined host Robin Young to discuss "Type T" or thrill-seeking personalities. Farley says people who are T-types view the current economic situation as an opportunity to grow and take chances, while others view it as the end of the world. More.

Is it time for Bollywood — as Indias huge Mumbai-based film industry is called — to come to America? Temple English Professor Priya Joshi, an expert on Indian culture, novels and cinema, said the cultural differences could make it difficult. “Bollywood films don't have any kissing in them or tend not to. Warner Bros. used to make movies like this in the past....If [Hollywood] is ready to ready to return to its roots, then it's ready for Bollywood.” More.

When no one's job is safe, no one's house is secure and no one knows exactly what to do about it, artists get to work. “That kind of stress often results in the need to scream, and art is a way of screaming,” said Temple's Miles Orvell, an English and American studies professor in the College of Liberal Arts, in a national “Morning Edition" report. "Difficult times like the one we are experiencing today can really bring out a kind of expressive culture in an interesting way.” More.

Jay Finestone, CLA ’76, is director of social work at Temple Hospital – Episcopal Campus. Finestone recently had two articles about child rearing published on the NASW National web site, Help Starts Here, as well as on the web site www.education.com. More.

Grant Weller, CLA ’08, was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force. He serves as an assistant professor of history at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. More.

Phil Halpern, CLA ’71, was elected president of the Lenox Chamber of Commerce, an organization with more than 200 member businesses in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. Phil and his wife, Linda, own Brook Farm Inn, a Victorian bed and breakfast. More.
