Third Annual Dunk ’n Dine Alumni Basketball Event Third Annual Dunk ’n Dine Alumni Basketball Event
On Jan. 24, alumni came together for Dunk ’n Dine, which included a buffet at the Engineering and Architecture Building with Dean Sadeghipour followed by a men’s basketball game at the Liacouras Center. In addition to cheering on the Temple Owls as they beat Charlotte, attendees saw the induction of former coach John Chaney and Dr. Ray Moyer, longtime team physician for Temple student-athletes, into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame! In conjunction with Temple University’s 125th anniversary this year, the College of Engineering is celebrating more than 85 years of engineering education. Dr. Rominder Suri, a new associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been awarded a $1.6 million grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to establish the Center for Pennsylvania Environmental Technologies for the Pharmaceutical Industry. More.

Mechanical Engineering Student Carries on a Family Tradition
Peter Strahs, a junior mechanical engineering major and president of the Ultimate Frisbee Club, brings a family tradition to the College of Engineering. He is one of 15 Hennessy family descendants who have graduated from or currently are attending Temple University. His grandmother, Mary Jane Carson Hennessy, began the tradition in 1942. More.

Men's Basketball Men’s Basketball Clinches A-10 Championship, Advances to NCAA
For the second straight year, the Owls dominated the A-10 tournament. With their 69-64 win over Duquesne, the men's team won the tournament title and a bid for the NCAA tournment. The Owls fell to No. 6 seed Arizona State in the first round. More.

Women’s Basketball Earns No. 9 Seed in NCAA Tournament, Falls to Florida
Tonya Cardoza and the Owls made their their sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after finishing 21-9 for the season. The team was outscored by the No. 8 seed Florida Gators in the first round of tournament action. More.

Women's Fencing Women's Fencing Shows Strong Finish in NCAA Championship
With five out of six team members qualifying to compete, the Temple women's fencing team captured 8th place in the NCAA Championship. Juniors Melissa Parker (foil) and Kristen Howell (epee) led the team, each placing 10th. The women also won their 13th consecutive National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (NIWFA) Championship this season. More.

Professor Michel Boufadel, chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, comments on the requirements needed to be a hydrologist. More.

Professor Robert Yantorno is teaching the General Education course “Investing for the Future.” He says the course is teaching students life skills, not career skills, and there is a big difference. Yantorno also is teaching his students that the economic downturn can be an opportunity to make money.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Lynne Tarka Ewell, ’86, followed a distinguished family tradition in Temple engineering. Her father, John Tarka, was the first chair of the Electrical Engineering Technology Department. In 1982, she became the first female student to be accepted into the electrical engineering program.

John B. Stetson Jr., ’96, of New Hope, Pa., was promoted from Lockheed Martin fellow to senior fellow. Stetson currently manages and contributes to Lockheed Martin’s advanced ballistic missile defense research and development and concept design group, including advanced work in nanomaterial systems.

Ami Vider, ’82, co-founded a technology strategy consulting practice. Leaf & Forest Strategy is a technology consulting and training group that develops and trains executives on the use of classic military strategy in today’s business. The company operates in the United States, Europe and the Middle East with offices in Palo Alto, Calif., and Tel Aviv, Israel.
