Three Decades Under the Sea
Imagine sunning on a beach in Cozumel, sailing in Grand Cayman or scuba diving along an exotic reef while earning academic credits. It’s not a slacker’s dream, but rather a decades-old program called Temple Underwater Medicine, which takes doctors out of rounds and brings them under the sea. More.

Surviving Lung Cancer
Countless people have heard the phrase, “You have lung cancer,” but only 50 can say they’ve completed a new treatment at Temple University that doubles their chances of surviving the deadly disease — and without the conventional radiation regimen or surgery. Doctors in the Radiation Oncology Department say the technique, stereotactic body radiotherapy, or SBRT, not only improves a person’s odds of surviving early stage lung cancer, but it may reduce the need for future surgeries.  THE FEED

TUSM faculty, staff and students make headlines every day. Read a sampling of TUSM's recent media hits.

From The Chicago Tribune:
Many of the people who have resolved to lose weight in 2009 will turn to diet pills. They may see modest results, but they’re no more likely to lose weight than those who choose diet and exercise alone. “There’s no ‘lose 20 pounds’ pill. Any time you see one of those crazy claims, definitely question it,” said Amy Virus of Temple’s Center for Obesity Research and Education. More.

From United Press International
A lung cancer diagnosis is no longer an automatic death sentence. A new trend in radiation oncology doubles the chances of surviving early stage lung cancer, says Curtis Miyamoto, professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Temple's School of Medicine. "With the success of this technique, we're now questioning whether we'll even be doing surgeries on these patients in the future," he said. More.

From CNN.com:
Millions of Americans suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a condition that generates depression during the darker months of autumn and winter. A recent study links the condition to a genetic mutation in the eye. The study’s results make sense to David Baron, chair of the School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. The study is “consistent with the literature on understanding genetics in vulnerability to illness,” he said. More.
