"Deliberative Democracy" is the idea that democracy is best served when there are opportunities for citizens to share ideas, participate in public dialogue and think about how opinions are formed. Traditionally, the press has played a role in facilitating news and information about the government to the citizenry. But now, as newspapers search for ways to better inform the public in a more media-saturated environment, the Internet has become an alternative space for expressions of opinion.
The "Deliberative Democracy: The Internet and Civic Engagement" symposium will address the issues of theorizing about deliberative democracy, learning about case studies in the world in which deliberative democracy models have succeeded or failed and how the role of the journalist as a prime interpreter of news and deliberation is changing.
