The Bridge - Alumni Association Newsletter

From the President...

September always makes me a little nostalgic for my time at the College of Liberal Arts. Something about the weather reminds me of the frenzy of activity around the Bell Tower and the excitement that comes with a new school year. Like so many of you, I look forward to visiting campus during Homecoming to try to recapture some of those memories.

As we start the new school year, nearly 700 freshmen in Temple’s class of 2014 are enrolled at CLA. You’ll learn about many of them -- and one in particular -- in this issue of the alumni e-newsletter.

Our students are not the only ones excited to begin a new academic year. Your CLA Alumni Association has also been busy planning a full lineup of activities and outings where you will have the opportunity to reconnect with each other and to meet some of our remarkable students. Stay tuned for e-mail invitations and future issues of The Bridge for details on events such as our upcoming happy hour at Paddy Whacks Pub.

Have ideas for future CLA Alumni Association outings? Want to get involved? I am always happy to hear from fellow alumni at Jerry.Vigna@temple.edu.

Go Owls!

From Compass: A Look at the Uncharted Territory of the Anthropology Lab

It's easy to file by the Anthropology Lab, tucked in a corner in Gladfelter Hall, without realizing that behind the double doors lies a space large enough to serve as a repository for cultural resource reports and collections from the National Park Service, as well as the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The lab hosts approximately 204 collections consisting of materials from the Americas and the Pacific. To learn more about some of the other remarkable collections kept in the lab, click here.

Piggy Banks for New Owls

At this year’s Convocation ceremonies, new students received more than just the usual T-shirt. Students were also given totes that held piggy banks as part of a philanthropic initiative for the college.

The project is designed to teach our newest students how gifts to the college support their education. At the end of each semester, students will be encouraged to turn in their change. Those students who participate consistently through graduation will then be eligible to turn in their piggy banks in exchange for a special “Owl” gift that will welcome them as new members of the CLA Alumni Association.

A Look at the Freshman Class
The College of Liberal Arts welcomed nearly 700 new freshmen this fall. One of them is Walker Dornisch, a psychology major who hails from Colorado. We took a few minutes to get to know him. Click here to read the interview.

At the university level, nearly 4,300 freshmen joined the Temple community. For a breakdown of the class of 2014 by the numbers, click here.
