"Telling it Like it Was: Tuskegee Airmen"

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States armed forces. Hear heroic stories firsthand from these Philadelphia WWII vets at the Blockson Collection.

Charles L. Blockson, founder of Temple's Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection and curator emeritus, will discuss resources in the Blockson Collection related to Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, the poet and abolitionist. Harper's list of accomplishments is remarkable: She was the first woman to teach at Union Seminary in Ohio; she gave a moving speech before the National Women's Rights Convention; and she was elected vice president of the National Association of Colored Women in 1897.

Lena Ampadu, assistant chair and associate professor in the Department of English at Towson University and director of the university's African and African American Studies Program, will discuss the important role women play in the African and African-American literary tradition. Presented by Temple University Libraries, Temple University Faculty of Color and Moonstone Arts Center.

"Black Soldiers in Blue"Black Soldiers in Blue: A screening and discussion by the filmmakers

Filmmakers and producers Zilan Munas and Warren Bass discuss their documentary about the courageous African-American soldiers who helped the Union to victory. This movie tells the story of the soldiers at Camp William Penn, the first and largest training camp for African-American soldiers during the Civil War. Please join us for a screening, followed by a discussion of the research and process involved in creating this historical documentary.
