School of Podiatric Medicine

Dear Alumni:

I’m certain you are aware of the shortage of entry level podiatric residency positions this year. I’m sure you empathize with the qualified graduates who cannot secure residency positions simply because there are none to be had. However, it’s difficult to fully appreciate the acuity of these students’ anguish and anxiety as I do from my consistent contact with them. It’s a feeling of helplessness I have when one or another of these students reaches out to me for help and I have nothing to offer. Perhaps, some of you may have more to offer than me.

The Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) will have a number of graduates who will be without residency programs but are none-the-less heeding my advice to sit for the APMLE Part III examination “just in case.” None of these students wish the misfortune of losing a program because of a failed exam on their classmates so that they might benefit, but that is always a possibility and the motivation for my advice. However, as I think of it, the young podiatrists who pass this examination in Pennsylvania can become fully licensed and able to work in several states. These are Connecticut, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. I’m asking each of our alumni with offices in these states to consider bringing on one of these graduates for the next year as an associate so that at least they can live and not default on their student loans. If you could use some help from someone who will be grateful to pitch in, please contact Dr. Sam Spadone, Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Program Integrity at 215-625-5239 (sspadone@tuspm.temple.edu) or Gia Ippolito, Assistant Director of Communications at 215-625-5249 (gippolito@tuspm.temple.edu).

Thanks for standing with me by our students in their time of greatest need.

Sincerely,

David C. Novicki, D.P.M. ’74 F.A.C.F.A.S
