Temple University

Dear ##First Name##,

Just over three years ago, I packed up my house and family to fly across the Atlantic in what would turn out to be the most exciting "dance move" of my life—a new job as Chair of Dance at Temple University! So much has happened since then and I want to share some of it now.

We have tweaked all of the dance programs to ensure that students are equipped to enter the professional world as artists, scholars and educators, with such exciting courses as "Choreographing Philadelphia" and "Writing the City," both of which capitalize on our dynamic urban location. We have welcomed new staff and faculty, including our Recruitment Representative Mary Garcia, internationally-renowned scholar Dr. Mark Franko, and from our own PhD program, ballet educator, performer and scholar, Dr. Laura Katz-Rizzo.

We continue to foster creative and critical engagement with dance through an annual choreographic commission, Reflection: Response and our speaker series, the Dance Studies Colloquium. And you can read about all of the wonderful dancing moments that our faculty and students encounter in their daily lives through our weekly Dance Department Blog.

We also continue to present our annual showcase of dances by alumni in early October. The Production Committee is in the process of mailing out letters requesting proposals right now. For more information and deadlines contact Nanette at njoyce@temple.edu.

Finally, we want to hear from our many alumni who have touched the field of dance in innovative and widespread ways, and use this impressive network of creative individuals to help advocate for current and future students at Temple. To this end, we have put together a Temple Dance Alumni Working Group and we will hold our first meeting at the end of September. I will certainly let you know about our planned activities and please let me know if you would like to get involved. You can always check back to the Dance Department website to learn more.

Sincerely,
Sherril Dodds
Dance Department Chair
